Mizzou Martial Arts Club
"Chan 'eil fhiss ciod an claidheamh a bhiss 'san truaill gus an tairnar e."
Welcome to the Mizzou Martial Arts Club. We are a student organization at the University of Missouri~Columbia which provides students, faculty, staff and members of the Columbia community the opportunity to study realistic martial arts for self-defense and/or train for sport competition within our specialized programs. We are commited to providing our members with the finest and most realistic martial arts training in Columbia. We currently offer classes in the Celtic Martial Art and Life System: Sli Beatha and in full-contact mixed martial arts competition from ancient Greece: Pankration. The Mizzou Martial Arts Club is dedicated to providing you with realistic, simple, effective and practical martial training and skill development within the tradition of honor, integrity and courage. Please explore our extensive website for lots of valuable information.
SPECIAL NOTE: I will be moving to Sydney, Australia in January of 2006 to start a PhD . As such, the MMAC will no longer be an active student organization. Thanks to all the MMAC students and fighters who have made the club such a rewarding experience. Keep working: the blood, sweat and tears of hard work, sacrifice and dedication are invaluable.
Because quality self-defense training is rare in an age of 9-year-old black belts, kata kings and pseudo-budos, I recommend the following local schools/systems for training. Bushidokan and Kenukan (Kansas City), Go Shin Kan (Jefferson City), Muay Thai, Kickboxing (Columbia), Hapkido.

Sli Beatha: Real Self-Defense for the Real World
Sli Beatha teaches real-world effective personal defense, including hand-to-hand and modern weapons training, based on Celtic principles and philosophy.
"From my experiences as a police officer, I can honestly say that Sli Beatha is the most realistic self defense system I have ever seen. This should be available to all police officers around the nation. Sli Beatha deals with practical applications in real-life situations. I would have felt much more confident on patrol with this system rather than what was taught to us at the academy. It really could save lives."
So said former Kansas City police officer Jeff Cheek after taking just two months of Sli Beatha in Overland Park, KS.
Few people realize that the Celts had developed highly effective systems of personal combat over 1,500 years before the monk Bodhidharma crossed the Himalayas from India to China, taking with him the seeds of what became the Oriental martial arts.
Sli Beatha (Shlee Bay-Huh), Irish Gaelic for "Way of Life", is a comprehensive martial system designed for realistic and practical personal defense and survival. It includes a formal study of anatomy, physiology, history, fitness and physics along with martial techniques, tactics and strategies, and stresses the importance of integrating the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of one's life, as well as taking responsibility for one's actions and abilities under a strict code of honor and integrity.
Sli Beatha is excellent for those wanting to study martial arts for practical defense purposes, survival, and prepares students with the tools needed for full-contact competition if they choose. Sli Beatha is excellent for both women and men, as well as those in law enforcement and the military.
Pankration: Full Contact Mixed Martial Arts Competition
For those interested in full-contact mixed martial arts competition, the ancient - and newly resurrected - Olympic sport of Pankration (we are licensed by the World Pankration Federation) allows martial athletes to develop their skills of striking and grappling while competing in WPF sanctioned events.
The term Pankration comes from the Greek words "pan", meaning all, and "kratos", meaning powers. Thus, pankration means "all powers", and describes the Hellenic sport which integrates striking and grappling in a format that includes techniques commonly found in muay thai, boxing, kickboxing, jujitsu and wrestling in a single competitive event.
Introduced into the Olympic Games in 648 B.C. during the 33rd Olympiad, pankration was considered the the premier event of the Olympics for over 1,000 years. Today, an amateur world-wide movement led by the World Pankration Federation is underway to further the art and sport of pankration and to support it's honorable return to the Olympic Games as the ultimate combat sport, providing great opportunities for those interested in the combat sports to develop their talents in an atmosphere described by the motto of the World Pankration Federation: "Honor - Integrity - Fair Competition".
